ABOUT CAPOEIRA MDP ROXBURY

Led by Instrutor Bambu, the mission of Capoeira MDP Roxbury (aka Roxbury Capoeira) is to build strong, safe communities in the Roxbury, Dorchester, and surrounding areas where people from a variety of different backgrounds can come together to empower each other and join a support network of similar communities across the Greater Boston area.

We believe that everyone deserves access to spaces that nurture growth and belonging. Whether you’re a young person navigating adulthood or an adult seeking connection and self-expression, Roxbury Capoeira offers a supportive environment where you can challenge yourself and uplift others.

Our classes are held every Saturday from 1:30-3:00pm at the Dewitt Center in the heart of Roxbury.

Roxbury Capoeira is part of Mandingueiros dos Palmares (MdP), a community-based organization dedicated to the practice, development, and sharing of the art of capoeira. Find out more about the broader group on our website.

ABOUT INSTRUTOR BAMBU

Instrutor Bambu has been training and teaching capoeira in the Boston area for over a decade, beginning with Mestre Chuvisco in the early 2000s. In 2022 he received the title of “Instrutor” and began teaching classes in the Roxbury area. His primary interests are sharing the passion and energy that he finds in capoeira with others and building a strong community here in Boston.

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that developed in the slave communities of Brazil throughout the 1700 and 1800s. It blends together movement, music, and community, drawing on many of the same Afro-diasporic traditions that are central to the cultural identity of Roxbury's diverse communities.

Today, Capoeira is practiced across the world, and provides a way for people of all ages to learn not only self-defense and physical fitness, but also emotional regulation, discipline, and empowerment.
